Promoting healthy watersheds to sustain clean water and vibrant ecosystems.
A watershed is an area of land that drains water, sediment and dissolved materials to a common receiving body or outlet. Regardless of your proximity to a waterbody, everyone lives in a watershed. Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac counties provide access to many lakes and rivers, including three Great Lakes and the St. Mary's River. CLMCD is dedicated to protecting and improving our waterbodies for future generations to enjoy. Managing issues at a local level allows for concise solutions that are more likely to provide lasting results.
One organization cannot manage a watershed alone. The cooperation of local partners and landowners is necessary and instrumental to the future of our waterbodies. CLMCD has led and supported multiple watershed restoration efforts. Past projects include:
Watershed management plans identify areas of concern within a specific watershed and outline recommendations for restoration plans. These plans are approved through the Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Once approved, plans can be used to secure further funding to implement the restoration projects identified within the plan. CLMCD has led and supported several watershed management planning efforts. This includes:
CLMCD has several projects that are currently underway. These projects are funded by
grants that CLMCD and partner organizations obtain through government agencies or
