This mix of plants will provide flowers, food, and habitat for a variety of beneficial insects, pollinators, and birds, all while protecting from errosion and preserving water quality. This kit includes groupings of plants meant to be planted in one of four different zones:

  • Zone 1 is below the water line, in the lake. Wild Blue Iris and Sweet Flag are Zone 1 plants and are the most water-tolerant in this kit, but seedlings should not be planted directly in the water. Instead, plant just above the waterline and allow them to spread into the water when established.
  • Zone 2 is between the waterline and the high water mark and is quite wet: Joe Pye Weed, Smooth Swamp Aster, Swamp Milkweed, Boneset, Monkey Flower, and Blue Lobelia.
  • Zone 3 is above the high water mark, but still moist: Tall Sunflower, Culver’s Root, Marsh Blazing Star, Blue Vervain, Dark Green Bulrush, and Turtlehead.
  • Zone 4 is upland, suitable for most native plants. The plants included to get you started on your native plant garden may include New England Aster,  Spikenard, Canada Wild Rye, Stiff Goldenrod, Spiderwort, Sweet Black-eyed Susan, Mountain Mint, Butterfly Milkweed, and Harebell.

We recommend creating a border along Zones 2 and 3 with Green Rush.  Substitutions may be necessary depending on availability. This economical kit includes 32 three-inch pots that fill 32 square feet at 1 foot spacing - a 4'x8' bed; or up to 72 square feet at 1.5 sq. ft. spacing - a 6'x12' bed. Comes with an information sheet. Each plant is individually tagged for identification and all tags include plant height and requirements, so you can alter the layout to suit your space.
